The Eco-friendly Office
By Elizabeth Barker for Green Goes Simple
Apart from a desk-side recycling bin, my at-home work space was seriously lacking in green features up until recently. So for help in creating a more eco-conscious office, I turned to Kim Carlson, author of Green Your Work. Here’s her advice:
- Keep your computer from eating up too much electricity by switching it over to energy-saving settings. Don’t leave your desktop on overnight, and remember to unplug all device chargers when they're not in use. To further slash your energy use, brighten your office with natural light and compact fluorescent lightbulbs rather than traditional ones.
- To make your workspace more tree-friendly, choose 30 to 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper. Also remember to think before you print: Store most (or all) of your information digitally, and print on both sides of each sheet whenever possible.
- Protect against indoor air pollution by adorning your
office with air-purifying plants such as bamboo, Boston ferns, peace lilies and
spider plants.
