Simple Steps

Have a Green Night out

By Amy Levin-Epstein for Green Goes Simple

Menu Options

Look for sustainable, local and organic foods when eating out. And don’t be afraid to ask your server for advice. A simple, “Have you got anything on the menu that is locally sourced?” will do the trick, says Sophie Uliano, author of the New York Times best-seller Gorgeously Green (GorgeouslyGreen.com). The greenest bets are usually vegetarian dishes or sustainable (and low-mercury) fish. “There definitely are fish to steer away from, like Chilean sea bass,” says Uliano.

Leftovers in Toss-out Containers

Doggie-bagging is great for your waistline and your wallet -- but the plastic containers and bags for leftovers aren’t very green. “If you know you’re going to a restaurant that has big portions, then go prepared,” says Uliano. She suggests packing small Pyrex containers in your purse. If you’re worried about breaking them, take along recycled BPA-free plastic ones (like those found at PreserveProducts.com).

Wasted Water

If you’re planning to stick with your glass of wine, don’t hesitate to tell your server that you won’t need water, or if it’s already there, that you don’t need a refill. “The constant refilling is such a waste of water,” says Uliano. Of course, water is hydrating and healthy, so drink up if you’re thirsty!

Out-of-control Takeout

If your night out begins with a meal in, be sure to request that no plastic utensils, napkins or condiments be included with your order. Use your own instead, says Uliano. Cloth napkins and real silverware enhance the eating experience -- and you won’t be throwing out all that paper or plastic at the end of the meal.

Green Ride

Carpooling isn’t just for kids! You’ll save money for parking, valets and gas, plus you’ll slash your carbon footprint. (Not to mention the cocktail-friendly benefits of using a designated driver.) You can also hop on a bus or subway and start your party on the way to your destination. “If you live somewhere with a good public transportation system, ask your friends to join you,” says Uliano. Most importantly, have a happy -- and green -- night out!
